To protect rich biodiversity in Maharashtra, 6 national parks, about 50 wildlife sanctuaries, and 6 tiger reserves have been declared. The Sahyadri mountain range in the Western Ghats and the deciduous forests of Vidarbha are important natural habitat areas for rare wildlife and plant species. The role of these protected areas is extremely valuable in in-situ conservation of wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.महाराष्ट्रात समृद्ध जैवविविधतेचे रक्षण करण्यासाठी ६ राष्ट्रीय उद्याने, सुमारे ५० वन्यजीव अभयारण्ये आणि ६ व्याघ्र प्रकल्प घोषित करण्यात आले आहेत. पश्चिम घाटातील सह्याद्री पर्वतरांग आणि विदर्भातील पानगळीची जंगले ही दुर्मिळ वन्यजीव व वनस्पतींच्या प्रजातींसाठी महत्त्वाची नैसर्गिक अधिवास क्षेत्रे आहेत. वन्यजीवांचे 'इन-सिटू' संवर्धन (In-situ conservation) आणि पर्यावरण समतोल राखण्यात या संरक्षित क्षेत्रांची भूमिका अत्यंत मोलाची आहे.
