Background

Digi Yatra is a biometric technology-based initiative by the Ministry of Civil Aviation aimed at providing passengers with contactless and seamless entry at airports. Having already proven successful for domestic air travel, the system is now being tested for international travelers using e-passports.

Key points for prelims

• Ministry: Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. (Ministry of Civil Aviation).
• Trial Period: The trials are organized between November and December 2026.
• Seven Selected Airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Chennai, and Amritsar.
• Eligibility: Indian citizens holding e-passports who are traveling on select international flights of Air India and IndiGo.
• Working Mechanism: A Verifiable Credential (VC) is generated on the Digi Yatra app by scanning the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) of the e-passport and reading the embedded chip via Near Field Communication (NFC).
• Crucial Condition: This facility complements existing procedures rather than replacing them; passengers are still required to carry physical passports and undergo immigration formalities.
• Progress: At the domestic level, it covers 39 airports with over 26.5 million users and more than 110 million passenger journeys logged; plans are in place to add 25 more domestic airports by 2027.

Mains angle

1. Introduction: Brief overview of the Digi Yatra system and the context of the pilot trials launched for international travel.
2. Significance of Digital Initiatives: Reduction in airport queues and wait times, contactless and secure passenger experience, promotion of 'Ease of Flying', and driving the goals of 'Digital India'.
3. Limitations and Challenges in International Travel: Inability to replace statutory immigration and security clearance processes; access restricted only to e-passport holders; mandatory requirement of NFC-enabled smartphones.
4. Conclusion: The need to balance technological innovation with national security while expanding the initiative comprehensively by 2027.
